Library Updates

New Director

Posted by thite on

We are pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees voted to hire Valerie Kocin as our next director. She will begin on June 13. Valerie currently serves as the director of the Collier County Public Library in Naples, FL. Prior to that, she served as a branch manager in the Cuyahoga County Public Library System.

We believe that we have selected the best possible director to lead the staff in expanding our community outreach and partnerships, innovating our services, and enhancing our high level of customer service. We are looking forward to Valerie’s stewardship of our library.

All City Art Walk

Posted by thite on

Cuyahoga Falls City Schools, in partnership with Cuyahoga Falls city leadership, local businesses, art studios and library, proudly announce the second annual Cuyahoga Falls All City Art Walk to be held on April 28th from 5-8 pm. As you stroll through town, choosing any of the four locations as a starting point, you will find artworks on display by Cuyahoga Falls artists in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Display locations include The Pavilion on the Riverfront, the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center, the Cuyahoga Falls Library and Jack Richard’s Studio. Pick up a map at any of our locations and begin your journey through our local art world.

This year’s theme – Art Has You Covered – will feature umbrellas created by art students at each of our schools that will be raffled off during the event. In addition to the incredible art displays, there will be live music, make-and-take art activities, food, fun photo opportunities (bring your camera), a scavenger hunt and more.

Thanks to the support of our community leaders, businesses and a generous grant from the Cuyahoga Falls Schools Foundation class of 1958, this event is free. For the latest updates, follow our website at

The arts foster creativity, strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills, improve academic performance and enable our students to express themselves in a way not taught by any other content area. The vision of this program is a shared commitment between the schools and our community focusing on the well-being and creative growth of our city in the arts, celebrating our students’ achievements and supporting their artistic voices.

Staff Spotlight

Posted by thite on

Joyce Bigam, Children’s Services Coordinator

How long have you worked at Cuyahoga Falls Library? Almost 15 years

What do you like best about your position? I find child development fascinating and I love observing it on a daily basis, especially that “ah ha” moment when a child discovers she can sound out the syllables of a word, read a sentence or make a castle out of blocks. I also love serving and interacting with patrons of all ages, including parents, grandparents and caregivers.

Who are your favorite authors? I’ll stick with picture book authors. I love Nancy Tafuri, Denise Fleming, Il Sung Na and Karen Katz. I also think Mo Willems is brilliant, and somehow thoroughly understands the mind of a child.

Is there something about you that might surprise people? I have a bit of a sense of adventure and have gone parasailing, white water rafting and ziplining, and I’d love to try skydiving.

What are your hobbies? Cycling, exercising, reading, cooking, dancing, and a little travel – especially to the beach.

How would you describe Cuyahoga Falls Library? The library is an excellent place to learn something new, revisit an old favorite, play with new friends, discover and create. It is society’s great equalizer and provides something for everyone. The Children’s Department is newly renovated and beautiful, and I encourage the public to stop in to enjoy it.
