Collection Development and Technical Services

Job Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Customer Experience Manager, the Manager of Collection Development and Technical Services directs the operations of the Collection Resources/Technical Services department, including coordinating the selection, acquisition, and processing of all library materials; analyzes material usage and recommends additions to the collection, assists with systemized weeding process, performs original and copy cataloging and supervises department staff. Must have knowledge of vendor software, processes, products, packaging and updates. Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university with minimum of three (3) years public library experience with progressive levels of responsibility and supervision or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Union experience is a plus. The position will focus on 35% collection development, 25% processing cataloging, 20% reference, 10% administrative and 10% other.

Essential Functions
• Determines necessary staffing and recommends any staffing level changes
• Recommends and monitors purchases and expenditures including print and digital materials, and library of things
• Creates and maintains department policies and procedures
• Coordinates the digital and physical ordering process to ensure efficient and economic purchases
• Assess inventory and acquisition system procedures; recommends and implements changes
• Oversees communication with vendor and publishers including monitors status and researches and recommends new vendors
• Gathers and complies statistics and other information including; patron suggestions and request, and collection size using statistics
• Ensures effective communication of Collection Resources information and current trends to all library employees
• Creates new release newsletter and e-blast regarding new releases
• Evaluates material usage and recommends additions, replacements and withdrawals
• Analyses library collection to identify areas of the collection requiring enhancement
• Ensures the library collection is comprehensive and individual areas of the collection meet the needs of the community
• Provides superior customer service, reader’s advisory, reference to customers
• Develops collection philosophies and policies with other Managers and Director

Circulation Services Manager

Do you enjoy providing top rated customer service? Do you want to be part of an all-star team that is providing a valuable resource to the community?    We have an opening for one full-time Circulation Services Manager at the Cuyahoga Falls Library.   The full-time position is scheduled 37.5 hours per week plus benefits.   The shift and hours scheduled will change each week and is based on the hours we are open and staffing.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible for overseeing entire circulation services activities, including the issuing, return and record keeping procedures of the library, assigning job tasks to library shelvers, training library circulation clerks in computerized circulation functions, excellent customer service practices, and teamwork.

 SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs activities of Circulation Clerks and Shelvers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular & punctual attendance; assigns job tasks to Circulation Clerks and verifies accuracy of assignments; provides monthly and annual reports of circulation activity, door count; makes work schedules; trains Circulation Clerks in computerized circulation functions; covers at circulation desk.

Ability to remain current as computer technology changes and best-practices in customer service evolve.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Requires Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred, plus three to five years’ progressive library experience.

General Duties

  • Receives oral or written direction from Customer Experience Manager and Director.
  • Plans work according to library schedule or standard routine.
  • Establishes priority of work tasks.
  • Participates in the development of operating policies and procedures.
  • Participates through suggestions, in the near-term and long range planning of library services.
  • Participates in library special projects as required or as necessary.
  • Evaluates circulation operating procedures, and makes adjustments as needed to improve efficiency.
  • Assigns work to paraprofessional, clerical staff, and shelvers.
  • Supervises the circulation of the library collection of books and non-book materials.
  • Oversees the enrollment of new patrons to the library.
  • Provides service and book and media collection information and advice to new and current patrons.
  • Supervises materials reserve system.
  • Is aware of all events, programs and services taking place at the Library and disseminates that information to all members of the Circulation staff so they can respond to any questions the public may have.
  • Supervises the receiving and recording of overdue fines and fees for lost and missing materials.
  • Recommends employment, promotion, and retention of departmental members.
  • Participates in periodic evaluation of assigned employees.
  • Provides training exercises for circulation department employees and monitors performance metrics of shelvers.
  • Reviews and resolves personnel problems within departm
  • Inspects damaged circulation materials, including books, audio visual items and equipment.
  • Identifies cataloging errors and directs materials to collection development department.
  • Maintains performance and repair of circulation equipment.
  • Serve and chair various library committees.
  • Recommends equipment improvements.
  • Maintains circulation data and prepares regular statistical reports for the Director and Customer Experience Manager.
  • Reports work accomplished to Customer Experience Manager.

Additional Duties

  • Performs routine circulation desk duties as necessary.
  • Oversees return of books and materials to shelves or storage places.
  • Oversees billing and collections operations.
  • Performs duties in other library departments as needed.
  • Supervises and provides continuous training to full-time, part-time and library volunteers.

Qualifications

  • The skills and knowledge required would be acquired with a Master’s Degree in Library Science, and four years of increasingly responsible professional library work, preferably with experience in library circulation control work.
  • Ability to apply principles of library science to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and coach. Previous Union experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods, including work delegation, scheduling, evaluating performance and maintaining morale.
  • Ability to relate effectively to library patrons and to co-workers.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise statistical and narrative reports.
